Recruiters’ tablets soon will get a makeover to improve capabilities and better support the needs of those in the field.
The tablets will receive a 64-bit image, whereas the laptops have a 32-bit image, said Mike Young, G6 project manager, who projected the imaging to begin by January.
“Recruiters will be more mobile with the tablet, and hopefully they’ll have more functionality with the tablet than they have with the laptop,” Young said.
“With the image that’s on the laptop right now, it’s kind of restrictive to what sites recruiters can go to, what applications they can use,” Young said. “We’re trying to negate that with a lighter version of the image on the tablet.”
The imaging is a two-phase process, Young said. During phase one, recruiters will have access to recruiting applications and will be able to use the tablets to carry out daily job tasks. During the second phase, the ability to use such tools as Facebook and other social media platforms will be added.
Eventually, recruiters will most likely turn their tablets into their information management officer, who will image the tablets and return them to the recruiters, Young added.
Young said that the laptops’ image and restrictions have caused many of the problems recruiters face when using the laptops.
“We’re only allowed to use Internet Explorer 9 on the laptops, and a lot of web sites or Google sites have stopped supporting that browser, so the recruiters were having issues going to certain web sites and going to Google,” Young said. “On the tablet, it’s a newer version of Internet Explorer, so we don’t have those compatibility issues that they have with the laptop.”
The new image is currently undergoing an End User Test to determine its functionality and discover any potential issues so the issues can be fixed, Young said.
“It was great to have a tablet that can function the same way a laptop can,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jeremy Ziller, Elizabethtown Recruiter Center leader and one of the recruiters testing out the new image.
With the new image, the tablet does everything recruiters need it to do, according to Master Sgt. Jeffery Crane, an initiatives NCO at Fort Knox who is also testing out the new image. “With this, it works like the laptop. It’s configured properly.”
