U.S. Army Recruiting Command announced the winner of the annual Davis-Kunisch Memorial Award to recognize this year’s most outstanding education services specialist during a presentation today on Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Bruce Schamburek, Las Vegas Medical Recruiting Battalion, is the first ESS from a medical recruiting battalion to receive the award.
“I’m really honored to receive this,” Schamburek said.
Schaumburek noted he sees the passion the ESSs bring to the field.
“What I do is just a small representation of what we do every day,” he said. “What we do collectively does make a difference.”
The award honors James F. Davis and William J. Kunisch, who both served as chief of the education division at USAREC headquarters.
Award winners are determined based on their performance appraisal, special projects and initiatives, community outreach, and supporting the field, according to Tony Castillo, education division chief at USAREC.
“Mr. Schamburek’s dedication to supporting the field force was a deciding factor in his selection as USAREC’s top ESS,” Castillo said. “Bruce conducted seven highly successful site visits to key universities, professional schools and residency programs within his battalion footprint.
“Bruce also demonstrated to leaders how to penetrate critical programs by utilizing best practices and was selected as a subject matter expert and reviewer to revise the college penetration program of the USAREC Health Care Recruiter Course.”
Schamburek received an Associate in Applied Science from Community College of the Air Force in 1987, a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Education in 2000, and a Master of Arts in Management from Wayland Baptist University in 2003.
Schamburek served as an education services specialist in Jacksonville, Florida, from 2009 to 2010 and in Sierra Vista, Arizona, from 2010 to 2012.
He has also worked as an academic advisor and adjunct instructor at Wayland Baptist University in San Antonio, Texas; an adjunct instructor, virtual campus online at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas; director of career services and an adjunct instructor at ITT Technical Institute in San Diego; and as an academic advisor, adjunct instructor and recruiter at Wayland Baptist University in Phoenix.
The award was presented during the first of two days of training that included ESSs from across the country and Puerto Rico.
“Your role is so, so, extremely important to what our mission is at USAREC,” Brig. Gen. Troy Kok, USAREC’s deputy commanding general, told the ESSs. “I can’t say thank you enough for the work that you do.”
