Of the 120-plus music acts playing the 2014 Vans Warped Tour, only one served in Baghdad, Iraq, between 2004-2005.
The 20th anniversary of the concert tour that draws the most American teenagers counted among its groups the Army Musical Outreach Team last summer.
Sgt. Corrin Campbell and her backing band were featured on the Hard Rock Kevin Says stage on 18 of the 42 stops.
Many factors made the appearances attractive for USAREC exposure: more than 16,000 attendees per day, covers the spectrum of rock music as well as hosting an electronic digital music stage, and 92 percent of attendees are ages 13-27.
“These young men and women attendees struck us as not afraid to think outside the box,” said Sgt. 1st Class Timothy Staudacher, NCOIC of the Army Musical Outreach Team. “From what the team has witnessed, many are natural leaders.”
With the support of recruiting centers, the Outreach Team and USAREC NCOs registered more than 1,950 fully qualified leads and 4,300 responses from teenaged attendees.
“This was a grass roots effort that not only produced leads and impressions but created a new engagement point as students were surprised that the Army was at Warped Tour,” Staudacher said. “The audience liked that we were present and had a relevant product that made many prospects stop, think, and continue a conversation.”
Besides snapping up the usual SWAG of water bottles and wristbands, kids got Sgt. Campbell's CDs to take home. Recruiters were able to start conversations using Campbell's Army story, demonstrating that the Army has many unique people, contributing in their own way to something larger than themselves.
USAREC G7/9 has bigger and better plans for Vans Warped Tour 2015. If funding is approved, Musical Outreach is planning on 40 shows in 35 battalions starting June 19 and ending August 8.
“With lessons learned from this summer’s pilot and input from around the command, we are targeting the full tour with a larger interactive footprint integration, expanded capabilities for local battalions, and new opportunities to involve local reserve TPUs in the events,” Staudacher said. “This past summer we scratched the surface. We plan on going to the next level, assisting the command in creating a funnel for recruiters to find the very best of America’s youth to become Soldiers.”
