Chicago Battalion used Google Apps to set up class schedules for attendees and conduct a survey for its annual training conference in April.
“We developed a survey for the recruiters to provide the command feedback on the interest of possible class topics,” said Maj. Martin Wennblom, battalion executive officer. “After reviewing the responses, a class schedule was created for the topics with the most interest.”
He came up with the idea to use the application suite of email, spreadsheets and calendars while speaking to high school students at a Leadership Experience and Development Conference in February.
"Many students and teachers in public schools today use Google products for their daily work,” Wennblom said. “So it was clear we have a great opportunity to learn from students and teachers on how we can do better in our work and projects in USAREC"
Capt. Brian DiDiego, battalion operations officer, helped create the forms using Google Cloud instead of using traditional tools such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Products.
"I didn't realize the capabilities of the Google Apps until I started working with them,” DiDiego said. “The products we created allowed for greater collaboration and coordination among staff members and it also allowed staff members to be creative in their realm of responsibilities thus challenging them to excel.”
The battalion’s work with Google Apps was a success, the XO said.
“It allowed for changes to be made on the fly. Recruiters had the ability to see any amendments such as classroom changes immediately on their tablets,” he said. “By using Google, the battalion was able to save on the costs that would have incurred to print programs and schedules.”
Though there’s room for improvement, but Weenblom said the battalion plans to use Google Apps for future projects and endeavors.
