More than 100 South Carolina high school football players participated in Columbia Battalion’s first Army Strong Elite Football Combine June 6 at Westwood High School in Columbia.
Columbia South Carolina Recruiting Company and the University of South Carolina Reserve Officers’ Training Corps organized the event.
“We wanted to give students an opportunity to showcase their talents,” said recruiter and combine coordinator Master Sgt. Sandra Powell.
The players were tested on the bench press, 40-yard dash, short shuttle, and vertical and broad jumps. Several current and former National Football League players worked one on one with participants on position drills and organized seven-on-seven scrimmages. Players received awards for each event, and the overall winner received a trophy.
“I really enjoyed this combine,” said New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy. “Everyone did a great job, especially since it was the first one. I hope to come back next year.”
Clancy is the cousin of Sgt. 1st Class Stephanie McLeod, Sandhill Recruiting Center commander.
Lt. Col. Barry Hale, University of South Carolina ROTC operations officer, talked to parents about Army benefits, March 2 Success, and the importance of planning for the future.
“This was a great event, I look forward to this again next year,” Hale said.
“It was a long hot day,” Powell said, “but the students, parents and coaches really seemed to appreciate our efforts. Many said it was the best combine they have attended.”
