Recruiters in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, are working with local pizza restaurants to deliver Army fliers.
Five different establishments in the city have agreed to attach Army Reserve advertising to pizza boxes when making deliveries.
The fliers list the recruiting center’s phone number and QR code for its Facebook page.
Center Leader Staff Sgt. Patrick Diedrich came up with the idea after ordering a pizza.
“I ordered a pizza from Domino’s and saw a flier on the box top,” he said. “I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask if we could place our fliers on boxes”
Diedrich reached out to Domino’s manager Adam Guidebeck.
“We allow flyers periodically for [local recruiters] when we aren’t running one of our own promotions,” Guidebeck said. “As of right now we will put the flyers we have on boxes."
Domino’s response inspired Diedrich to work with other local businesses.
This venture allows Diedrich to quickly reach out to thousands of potential prospects.
“It pays to pay attention to your surroundings and use them to your advantage,” he said. “For me pizza is perfect because this is a college town and everybody is ordering pizzas. Sometimes the best ideas are delivered right to your doorstep.”
The attachments – produced by the battalion advertising and public affairs office - read, “There’s a place where people go to get ahead in life: the Army Reserve. There you can stay in your community to get an education and build your career while also serving your country. As an Army Reserve Soldier, you will gain an edge in life like never before. To learn more, visit us at goarmy.com/reserve.”
USAREC headquarters SJA attorney advisor Kevin Luster said, recruiters interested in developing these types of promotions with local businesses need to work with their battalion A&PA specialists to initiate a request for an appropriate contract using LAMP funds.
Recruiters may not enter into promotional agreements with local businesses or vendors on behalf of the government. Only contracting officers have authority to do that.
